Randwick Green Councillors Lindsay Shurey and Murray Matson have reacted favourably to this morning’s announcement that the State Government will move the contentious light rail interchange out of High Cross Park at Randwick Junction.
Councillor Shurey was instrumental in responding to community calls for action to save the park with her “Fair Go For Randwick” motion of last year that committed the Council to scoping out an alternative site for the facility.
The Council project subsequently became a clash point between the Greens and Labor when Shurey then ran for the seat of Coogee. At the time Councillor Matson heavily criticised the Labor candidate for not unambiguously supporting the Council’s “rescue bid”.
Councillor Matson said this morning that he had discussed the good news with Councillor Shurey. He said,
“Councillor Shurey says this is a big win for the community activists who rallied to save High Cross Park. She told me she is also grateful to her fellow Councillors for supporting her motion to fund a Council search for an alternative interchange site.”
