High Cross Park and the CSELR: How the Battle to Save It From a Light Rail Interchange Was Won – 18th September 2015

Matson Fair Go For Randwick rally 19-7-2104 - 3 - REDUCED

The saving of Randwick’s High Cross Park is a story of an organised community campaign and its local Council putting money and resources into working positively with the State Government to scope out an alternative light rail interchange site.

It has little to do with the input of State MP’s.

The heroes of this weeks’ announced change to the CBD to South East Light Rail design that will see the interchange moved to nearby High Street are;

  • Community activist Ms Rickie-Lee McLaurin-Smith who tirelessly organised events around the Park;
  • Greens Councillor Lindsay Shurey who lodged the key Council motion that it fund a search for an another interchange site;
  • former Liberal Mayor Scott Nash who worked Shurey’s motion into the draft development agreement to be signed with the Government; and
  • Council staff who threw themselves into making the alternative proposal workable.
