Randwick Greens Councillor calls for urgent support for marriage equality legislation following Labor caucus decision to block Prime Minister Malcom Turnball’s plebiscite – 11th October 2016

Dear fellow Randwick Councillors.

I ask for your support for the attached urgent business as I believe it is now important that the Prime Minister be encouraged to realign the Coalition towards supporting marriage equality legislation in line with expectations placed on him by the gay and lesbian community at the last Federal election.

Thank you.

SUBJECT:   Request for consideration of Urgent Business at Community Services Committee meeting:  “Advise local MP’s of Council support for marriage equality legislation.”

 BACKGROUND

Today’s media reports indicate that the Federal Labor caucus has resolved not to support the Prime Minister’s proposed marriage equality plebiscite.

TEXT OF URGENT BUSINESS FOR COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMITTEE:

That Council responds to today’s news that the Federal Labor caucus has resolved not to support the Prime Minister’s proposed marriage equality plebiscite by writing to the local federal MP’s for Kingsford-Smith, Sydney and Wentworth advising that Council considers that the only option now possible to achieve equality for all our residents would be to support legislation on behalf of gay and lesbian residents of Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
